A better understanding of how presence can be optimized on different displays, may also lead to the possibility to use less complex display types (as compared to HMD's or CAVE's) to create virtual reality consumer applications. It also opens the possibility to tailor the virtual reality display to the individual, optimizing presence. Research approach -- First, we investigate the relationships between perceived presence and some human factors, including stereoscopic ability, depth impression, and personality. We describe this experiment here in some detail. Second, we focus on the potential maximum presence that can be obtained for specific devices, for example, by manipulating the size, perspective and viewing distance. Third, we will investigate how monocular depth cues can be used to maximize presence for different display types. Finally, we will look specifically at how presence can be maximized on small hand-held devices, for example by incorporating compensation for display movement. In all our experiments we will focus on public speaking and person-to-avatar communication. Presence is measured in three different ways: 1) through questionnaires, 2) behaviourally, and 3) physiologically. Motivation--Several factors such as the kind of display technology and the level of user interaction have been found to affect presence (e.g., IJsselsteijn et al, 2000). Generally, it had been concluded that the more immersive types of display result in higher levels of presence. However, studies comparing the effect of display technology on presence are mostly based on rendering the same content across different displays. Previous studies have typically not attempted to optimize the content for each display type individually. Furthermore, it has not been considered before that some viewers may not benefit as much as others from higher levels of technology." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/Ling%3A2010%3ARDT%3A1962300.1962369" tags: - "optimization" - "rule-based" - "human-computer interaction" - "source-to-source" - "systematic-approach" - "human factors" - "open-source" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-Ling%3A2010%3ARDT%3A1962300.1962369" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-Ling:2010:RDT:1962300.1962369" - title: "minimal connectedness: exploring the effects of positive messaging using mobile technology" author: - name: "Marije Kanis" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/marije-kanis" - name: "Mark Perry" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/mark-perry" - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" year: "2008" doi: "http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1358628.1358708" abstract: "This paper describes a lightweight mobile technology designed to investigate the potential of positive messaging. Three data-gathering activities were conducted in the UK local areas of Hillingdon and Medway. The findings of this study illustrate that by employing the diffusion theory of King et al., the local government policies are reducing the digital divide. However, the danger does exist that in the pursuit of providing an equitable distribution of the e-society, a novel and diverse form of digital divide, a rural-and-urban-and-diverse-ethnic-groups divide, could occur. This research should offer a substantial contribution to various stakeholders, including government agencies, management consulting firms, internet service providers and Information Technology (IT) organisations, who may want to identify areas where e-government services can still be improved." links: doi: "http://dx.doi.org/10.1504/EG.2007.014167" tags: - "translation" - "digital divide" - "diffusion" - "data-flow" - "broadband internet" - "e-science" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/ChoudrieBP07" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "EG" volume: "4" number: "3" pages: "345-359" kind: "article" key: "ChoudrieBP07" - title: "Towards an empirical method of efficiency testing of system parts: A methodological study" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Reinder Haakma" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/reinder-haakma" - name: "Don Bouwhuis" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/don-bouwhuis" year: "2007" doi: "http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.intcom.2007.01.002" abstract: "Current usability evaluation methods are essentially holistic in nature. However, engineers that apply a component-based software engineering approach might also be interested in understanding the usability of individual parts of an interactive system. This paper examines the efficiency dimension of usability by describing a method, which engineers can use to test, empirically and objectively, the physical interaction effort to operate components in a single device. The method looks at low-level events, such as button clicks, and attributes the physical effort associated with these interaction events to individual components in the system. This forms the basis for engineers to prioritise their improvement effort. The paper discusses face validity, content validity, criterion validity, and construct validity of the method. The discussion is set within the context of four usability tests, in which 40 users participated to evaluate the efficiency of four different versions of a mobile phone. The results of the study show that the method can provide a valid estimation of the physical interaction event effort users made when interacting with a specific part of a device." links: doi: "http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.intcom.2007.01.002" technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-BrinkmanHB07" tags: - "empirical" - "usability testing" - "logfile analysis" - "rule-based" - "operating system" - "component-based software engineering" - "software components" - "usability" - "software component" - "testing" - "analysis" - "software engineering" - "HCI" - "context-aware" - "mobile" - "systematic-approach" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/BrinkmanHB07" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "Interacting with Computers" volume: "19" number: "3" pages: "342-356" kind: "article" key: "BrinkmanHB07" - title: "Usability Testing of Interaction Components: Taking the Message Exchange as a Measure of Usability" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Reinder Haakma" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/reinder-haakma" - name: "Don Bouwhuis" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/don-bouwhuis" year: "2004" abstract: "Component-based Software Engineering (CBSE) is concerned with the development of systems from reusable parts (components), and the development and maintenance of these parts. Still few studies focus on creating an elaborate conversation between the patient and characters in a virtual environment. This study focuses on techniques to run a semi-scripted conversation between virtual characters and a patient considering both manual and automatic speech response. Techniques evaluated are a speech detector and a speech recognizer. They were compared to a human control condition. We analyzed the flow and interaction individuals (N = 24) experienced and did a Turing like test. A case study with two phobic patients was also conducted. Both patients and therapist and their interaction with the system were observed. The study showed that the different automatic techniques had their (dis)advantages but often did not show any significant difference with the human control condition. A VRET system with semi-scripted conversations might therefore be suitable for the treatment of patients with social phobia. Using automatic speech response techniques might reduce the system workload demand placed upon therapists, allowing them to devote more attention towards monitoring the patient." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/7608" tags: - "control systems" - "exposure therapy" - "interaction design" - "social phobia" - "case study" - "virtual reality" - "design research" - "testing" - "human-computer interaction" - "speech dialogue" - "data-flow" - "Meta-Environment" - "social" - "design" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-7608" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-7608" - title: "Effect of map sharing and confidence information in situation-map making" author: - name: "Gunawan, Lucy" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/gunawan%2C-lucy" - name: "Alers, Hani" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/alers%2C-hani" - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Neerincx, Mark" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/neerincx%2C-mark" year: "2010" doi: "http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1962300.1962312" abstract: "Motivation -- A situation map that shows the overview of a disaster situation serves as a valuable tool for disaster response teams. It helps them orientate their location and make disaster response decisions. It is, however, a quite complicated task to rapidly generate a comprehensive situation map of a disaster area. In this paper, we report on an investigation of how two persons can collaborate to make a situation map. Research approach -- We performed a controlled laboratory experiment, in which 32 participants (grouped into 16 pairs) made a situation map of incidents. The experiment was set up as a two-way repeated-measures design with the type of collaboration and the availability of confidence level information as within-subject factors. Findings/Design -- The results suggest that the collaboration type can affect the quality of the situation map. Additionally, the results also suggest that the availability of confidence information influences the discussion process during collaboration. The participants perceived the availability of confidence level information as being positive. Research limitations/Implications -- The order of using the types of collaboration might have caused a learning effect by participants. Furthermore, the lack of a practice session might have had an influence on participants' object recognition during the first session of the experiment. Originality/Value -- The study takes the position that the affected population in a disaster can actively participate in the situation-map making process. For effective customisation, designers need to (i) segment their user population, and (ii) understand the relationship between the segmentation and the dimensions in which an application can be skinned. This paper presents two exploratory pilot studies that focus on user personality as a way to segment a user group, and colour as a skinning dimension. Instead of the traditional questionnaire style personality inventories, the study looks at user interaction behaviour as a way to determine the user personality. In the first study, 16 participants were asked to use an application for 5 days and to complete the IPIP-NEO personality inventories. Analysis of the recorded interaction behaviour and the participants’ personality, revealed significant correlations between behavioural measures such as time between two consecutive user actions, or the number of user actions made, and personality traits such as extraversion, and conscientiousness. A second pilot study asked 20 participants also to complete the personality inventory and to indicate their preferences for 5 colour-skins of two applications. The results revealed significant correlations between personality traits and skin colour such as blue and extraversion, but also between black and imagination. These early findings suggest that designers could develop customized skins based on users’ behaviour." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-34" tags: - "rule-based" - "completeness" - "analysis" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-abcde-34" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-abcde-34" - title: "What do people like?: the design of a mobile tool to harness and share positive thoughts" author: - name: "Marije Kanis" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/marije-kanis" - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" year: "2007" doi: "http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1362550.1362589" abstract: "Motivation -- To increase understanding of technologymediated sharing of positive thoughts. To explore functional requirements and social acceptance in different use contexts, we followed a three-step approach. In the first step, we conducted a number of focus groups with negotiation experts. Second, we conducted focus groups with potential users. The focus groups were a qualitative exploration of people?s ideas about NSS that led to design guidelines for mobile NSS. Third, we conducted an online survey (a) to find out in which situations people consider a mobile NSS socially acceptable, (b) to find the factors and relationships that influence this acceptance in the different situations and social contexts, and (c) to investigate the consequences of people?s attitudes toward NSS for the system?s design. The data showed that subjective norm is an important factor influencing the intention to use the system and that the acceptance of NSS depends on the use context. Therefore, we argue that NSS should be designed not only merely as tools being used in the actual negotiation but also as social devices harnessing social networks to provide support in all negotiation phases." note: "10.1007/s10111-011-0181-8" links: "url": "http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10111-011-0181-8" tags: - "data-flow" - "survey" - "C++" - "context-aware" - "social" - "Pascal" - "design" - "mobile" - "systematic-approach" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/springerlink%3A10.1007-s10111-011-0181-8" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "Cognition, Technology & Work" pages: "1-19" kind: "article" key: "springerlink:10.1007-s10111-011-0181-8" - title: "Designing technologies that encourage the sharing of positive emotions" author: - name: "M. It helps them to orientate their location and to make disaster response decisions. It is, however, a complicated task to rapidly generate a complete and comprehensive situation map of a disaster area, particularly due to the centralized organization of disaster management and the limited emergency services. In this study, we propose to let the affected population be utilized as an additional resource that can actively help to make such a situation map. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of constructing a shared situation map using a collaborative distributed mechanism. By examining earlier research, a detailed list of potential problems is identified in the collaborative map-making process. These problems were then addressed in an experiment which evaluated a number of proposed solutions. The results showed that more collaboration channels led to a situation map of better quality, and that including confidence information for objects and events in the map helped the discussion process during the map-making." note: "Cognitive Ergonomics for Situated Human-Automation Collaboration" links: technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-Gunawan2011308" "url": "http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0953543811000361" tags: - "completeness" - "situation awareness" - "map making" - "collaboration" - "HCI" - "Meta-Environment" - "disaster response" - "meta-objects" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/Gunawan2011308" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "Interacting with Computers" volume: "23" number: "4" pages: "308-316" kind: "article" key: "Gunawan2011308" - title: "An Explorative Study into a Tele-delivered Multi-patient Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy System" author: - name: "Christian Paping" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/christian-paping" - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Charles van der Mast" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/charles-van-der-mast" year: "2010" doi: "http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.3233/978-1-60750-571-6-203" abstract: "The use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology to support the treatment of patients with phobia, such as the fear of flying, is getting considerable research attention. VR treatment may provide substantial improvement in efficient use of therapist resources and accessibility by delivering the treatment over the internet, to multiple patients simultaneously. This motivated initial exploration into the possibilities of a multiple-patient Virtual Reality Exposure Treatment (VRET). With such a setup, one therapist can monitor and treat multiple-patients simultaneously, each having their own personal VR treatment at their own personal location. The approach taken was (1) a scenario-based investigation with six therapists that had extensive experience in treating patients with VRET, and (2) a controlled lab experiment with 27 (students) participants to examine the effect of an automated assistance function on the therapists’ workload and performance when treating three computer-simulated patients over the internet. The findings of both the scenario-based investigation and lab experiment are encouraging. They imply that a tele-delivered multi-patient VRET system might be possible in the future, thereby providing treatment at remote locations and making efficient use of therapist resources." links: doi: "http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.3233/978-1-60750-571-6-203" technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-PapingBrinkmanvan-der-Mast2010" tags: - "control systems" - "anxiety disorders" - "exposure therapy" - "rule-based" - "mental health computing" - "tele-treatment" - "virtual reality" - "intellegent user interface" - "user interface" - "e-health" - "cyberpsychology" - "systematic-approach" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/PapingBrinkmanvan-der-Mast2010" cites: 0 citedby: 0 pages: "203-219" booktitle: "Coping with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Returning Troops " volume: "68" series: "NATO Science for Peace and Security Series - E: Human and Societal Dynamics" publisher: "IOS Press" kind: "incollection" key: "PapingBrinkmanvan-der-Mast2010" - title: "Self-reported preference and ease-of-use and enjoyment of traditional vs. stylus input for children in a Brazilian primary school" author: - name: "D. However, until recently less research attention has been given to the design of learning technology with regard to their usability, actual use, and the way they motivate and engage learners. Learner centered design [7] looks beyond the technological possibilities such as distance learning, virtual reality, and computer assisted assessments by focussing on learners in their learning contexts, and how their interaction with these applications can help and stimulate them to apply deep learning strategies. However, what are the best and most effective ways to accomplish this? Can lessons learned in the field of HCI be directly applied, or do e-learning applications have their own set of design guidelines? The workshop plans to bring together individuals with an interest in the design and use of e-learning systems with the aim of improving and understanding the learning experience. The workshop will be a platform to discuss new ideas and to share experiences, but also to identify new research challenges and potential solutions." links: doi: "http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1531407.1531466" dblp: "http://dblp.uni-trier.de/rec/bibtex/conf/bcshci/BrinkmanPPGU07" technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-BrinkmanPPGU07" tags: - "interaction design" - "design science" - "workshop" - "design research" - "human-computer interaction" - "HCI" - "e-science" - "context-aware" - "e-learning" - "design" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/BrinkmanPPGU07" cites: 0 citedby: 0 pages: "201-202" booktitle: "Proceedings of the 21st British HCI Group Annual Conference on HCI 2007: HCI...but not as we know it - Volume 2, BCS HCI 2007, University of Lancaster, United Kingdom, 3-7 September 2007" editor: - name: "Thomas C. An increase in test effectiveness implies the need for fewer participants in usability tests that study different versions of a component. Three component-specific measures are presented and analyzed: an objective efficiency measure and two subjective measures, one about the ease-of-use and the other about the users' satisfaction. Whereas the subjective measures are obtained with a questionnaire, the objective efficiency measure is based on the number of user messages received by a component. Besides describing the testing method, this paper also discusses the underlying principles such as layered interaction and multiple negative-feedback loops. The main contribution of the work described is the presentation of component-based usability testing as an alternative for traditional holistic-oriented usability tests. The former is more aligned with the component-based software engineering approach, helping engineers to select the most usable versions of a component." links: doi: "http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/TSMCA.2008.2001056" technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-BrinkmanHB08" tags: - "logfile analysis" - "rule-based" - "component-based software engineering" - "software components" - "meta-model" - "usability" - "software component" - "testing" - "analysis" - "principles" - "meta-analysis" - "software engineering" - "model-driven engineering" - "Meta-Environment" - "systematic-approach" - "meta-objects" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/BrinkmanHB08" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part A" volume: "38" number: "5" pages: "1143-1155" kind: "article" key: "BrinkmanHB08" - title: "The therapist user interface of a virtual reality exposure therapy system in the treatment of fear of flying" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Charles van der Mast" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/charles-van-der-mast" - name: "Guntur Sandino" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/guntur-sandino" - name: "Lucy T. Research mainly focuses on the patient experience and the effect of the treatment. In this paper, however, the focus is on the interaction therapists have with the system. Two studies are presented in which the therapist user interface is redesigned and evaluated. The first study was conducted in 2001 with the introduction of the system into the clinic. The original user interface design was compared with a redesign that was based on interviews with therapists. The results of a user study with five therapists and 11 students showed significant usability improvement. In 2008 a follow-up study was conducted on how therapists were now using the redesigned system. Using a direct observation approach six therapists were observed during a total of 14 sessions with patients. The analysis showed that: 93% of the exposures had similar patterns, therapists triggered 20 inappropriate sound recordings (e.g. the pilot giving height information while taking off), and more complex airplane simulation functions (e.g. roll control to make turns with the airplane) were only used by a therapist who was also a pilot. This resulted in a second redesign of the user interface, which allowed therapists to select flight scenarios (e.g. a flight with extra long taxiing, a flight with multiple taking off and landing sessions) instead of controlling the simulation manually. This new design was again evaluated with seven therapists. Again, results showed significant usability improvements. These findings led to five design guidelines with the main tenet in favour of a treatment-focused user interface (i.e. specific flying scenario) instead of a simulation-focused user interface (i.e. specific airplane controls). Results show that the usability of the individual components can be measured, and that they can be priorities on their potential for improvement." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-35" tags: - "reusable components" - "rule-based" - "software components" - "software component" - "testing" - "reuse" - "maintenance" - "software engineering" - "Meta-Environment" - "mobile" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-abcde-35" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-abcde-35" - title: "The role of display technology and individual differences on presence" author: - name: "Ling, Yun" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/ling%2C-yun" - name: "Nefs, Harold T" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/nefs%2C-harold-t" - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Heynderickx, Ingrid" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/heynderickx%2C-ingrid" - name: "Qu, Chao" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/qu%2C-chao" year: "2010" doi: "http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1962300.1962369" abstract: "Originality/Value -- Having a better understanding of the relation between human factors and feelings of presence may facilitate the selection of people that are most likely to benefit from virtual reality applications such as virtual reality exposure therapy (e.g. Krijn et al, 2004). Furthermore, it has not been considered before that some viewers may not benefit as much as others from higher levels of technology." links: doi: "http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1962300.1962369" technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-Ling%3A2010%3ARDT%3A1962300.1962369" "url": "http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1962300.1962369" tags: - "optimization" - "rule-based" - "virtual reality" - "display technology" - "human-computer interaction" - "source-to-source" - "individual differences" - "visual presence" - "systematic-approach" - "human factors" - "open-source" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/Ling%3A2010%3ARDT%3A1962300.1962369" cites: 0 citedby: 0 pages: "323-326" booktitle: "Proceedings of the 28th Annual European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics" series: "ECCE '10" address: "New York, NY, USA" publisher: "ACM" isbn: "978-1-60558-946-6" kind: "inproceedings" key: "Ling:2010:RDT:1962300.1962369" - title: "Virtual reality to study responses to social environmental stressors in individuals with and without psychosis" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Veling, Wim" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/veling%2C-wim" - name: "Dorrestijn, Emily" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/dorrestijn%2C-emily" - name: "Sandino, Guntur" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/sandino%2C-guntur" - name: "Vakili, Vanessa" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/vakili%2C-vanessa" - name: "van der Gaag, Mark" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/van-der-gaag%2C-mark" year: "2011" month: "2011" doi: "http://dx.doi.org/10.3233/978-1-60750-766-6-86" abstract: "A Virtual Reality (VR) environment was created to study psychotic symptoms in patients and non-patients. Three data gathering activities were conducted in the UK local areas of Hillingdon and Medway: a survey that included 620 completed responses from the citizens; focus group discussions in both locales and interviews with the local government managers responsible for the local e-government initiatives. To ensure a high response rate from the ethnic groups and disabled citizens the snowball data gathering strategy was employed. The findings of this study illustrate that by employing the diffusion theory of King et al, the local government policies are reducing the digital divide. However, the danger does exist that in pursuit of providing an equitable distribution of an e-society a novel and diverse form of digital divide, a rural and urban and diverse ethnic groups divide could occur. This research should offer a substantial contribution to various stakeholders including government agencies, management consulting firms, Internet Service Providers and IT organisations who may want to identify areas where e-government services can still be improved. Using automatic speech response techniques might reduce the system workload demand placed upon therapists, allowing them to devote more attention towards monitoring the patient." links: technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-7608" "url": "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/~willem-paul/WP_Papers_online_versie/Design_and_Evaluation_of_a_Virtual_Reality_Exposure_Therapy_System_with_Automatic_Free_Speech_Interaction.pdf" tags: - "control systems" - "anxiety disorders" - "exposure therapy" - "interaction design" - "mental health computing" - "social phobia" - "case study" - "Turing test" - "design research" - "testing" - "human-computer interaction" - "speech dialogue" - "data-flow" - "cyberpsychology" - "Meta-Environment" - "social" - "design" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/7608" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "Journal of CyberTherapy and Rehabilitation" volume: "4" number: "1" pages: "41-55" kind: "article" key: "7608" - title: "Cognitive Ergonomics for Situated Human-Automation Collaboration" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Mark A. Cognitive Styles Analysis (CSA) by Riding and Rayner [11] was selected as the instrument to determine whether students were field-dependent or field-independent. Students{\\textquoteright} attitudes toward using WebCT (Web Course Tools) were measured by a questionnaire specially designed for this intention. Students{\\textquoteright} activities on WebCT were observed through the tracking system which provided information about students{\\textquoteright} use of every tool and page on WebCT. Three component-specific usability measures are presented: an objective performance measure, a perceived ease-of-use measure, and a satisfaction measure. The objective performance measure is derived from the message exchange between components recorded in a log file, whereas the other measures are obtained through a questionnaire. The power of the measures was studied in an experimental setting. Eight different prototypes of a mobile telephone were subjected to usability tests, in which 80 subjects participated. Analyses of the statistical power of these measures show that the component-specific performance measure can be more powerful than overall usability measures, which means fewer users are needed in a test. An important element of this therapy is exposure to anger evoking stimuli. In this paper virtual reality is put forward as a technology that can effectively create these stimuli by exposing patients to social scenes that include anger stressors such as aggressive dialogues with virtual characters or arousing surrounding with loud music or flashing light. Applying a situated cognitive engineering approach a prototype system was developed which allowed a therapist to control these stressors. To evaluate the prototype an experiment was conducted in which participants, 18 non-patients and 2 patients, were exposed in a virtual environment to three types of social scenes: (1) a passive dialogue, (2) an aggressive dialogue, and (3) an aggressive dialogue with arousing surrounding. Results showed that these conditions had a significant effect on participants{\\textquoteright} galvanic skin response and the type of verbal reply towards the avatar. Standard treatment or training involves gradually exposing patients to social situations they fear. These exposures are however difficult to control for a therapist. An alternative therefore might be to use virtual reality exposure. This paper reports on the design of four social scenarios (a bus stop and a train station and a clothing shop and and a reception desk of a restaurant) implemented in virtual reality. The ability to monitor patient anxiety level helps therapists to set appropriate anxiety arousing situations. Physiological measures have been put forward as objective indicators of anxiety levels. Because of individual variation, they need a baseline recording which is often conducted in neutral virtual worlds which do not include phobic stressors. Still because of the novelty of the virtual worlds, reports in the literature suggest that individuals already show some level of arousal when placed in these worlds. This paper presents two studies which look at the effect two different neutral virtual worlds can have on individuals. Research approach -- Following in the positive psychology tradition, two studies involving over 50 participants, using paper-based questioning techniques and social-online tools were conducted that captured over 150 contributions on what thoughts people like to share. The contributions were analysed and motivated the design of a positive expressive prototype. Findings/Design -- The studies conducted showed the potential for a prefix-based elicitation of positive emotions and suggest that various messages of a predominantly positive nature can be harnessed. The contributions revealed the importance of immediacy in expression. This drove the development of a mobile tool called PosiPost Me (Mobile Edition) that allows users to create and share positive thoughts anytime and anywhere. Research limitations/Implications -- Early findings suggest that PosiPost Me has the potential to study and catalyze beneficial effects such as increasing social awareness. Additional studies will have to further explore and verify these benefits. Originality/Value -- This research provides the design of a mobile tool that aims to encourage positive communication through technology. It is also an exemplar of how on-line social tools and positive psychology can be beneficial for theories and studies of human computer interaction. Three prototypes were designed and formative evaluated in an industrial environment. The evaluation of the first prototype showed that maintenance engineers encountered serious problems with the online multimedia manual, as they omitted crucial steps in the task. Still, a recent review reports on high drop-out and non response rates. This has motivated work into the design of a software application to support and to increase the appeal of traditional face-to-face trauma-focused psychotherapy. The research followed a situated cognitive engineering approach, which included a domain analysis, scenarios and claims analysis based on experts reviews (N=10), user evaluations, and a case study. This resulted in the identification of nine core application functions: (1) provide a flexible way of storytelling, (2) provide a structured way of storytelling, (3) prevent losing track of changed and added events, (4) ensure patient trust, (5) ensure usage for therapists with different backgrounds, (6) ensuring awareness of treatment, (7) provide a personal approach, (8) prevent unexpected exposure to emotional material, (9) and ensure appealing and motivating approach throughout the therapy. These functions formed the basis for the design of a military multi-modal memory restructuring (Military - 3MR) system, which focuses on restructuring and relearning of past events. The system allows patient and therapist to visualise past events using personal photos, narrative text, online geographical maps, webcam snapshots, and patient created 3D virtual worlds. Results of the usability evaluation (N=18) suggests key design features such as the time line, content manage, and the 3D world editor, of an acceptable perceived usability level. Results of a storytelling experiment (N=18) between telling an autobiographical story with or without Military-3MR system, found that with the system, time referencing and event description were more precise, and a smaller time period in the story was covered. In the case study, the veteran suffering from combat-related PTSD was pleased with the system and felt encouraged talking about his past events." links: technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-7607" tags: - "PTSD" - "rule-based" - "case study" - "design research" - "domain analysis" - "analysis" - "software engineering" - "Military-3MR" - "posttraumatic stress disorder" - "reviewing" - "context-aware" - "3MR" - "design" - "multimedia" - "systematic-approach" - "systematic review" - "cognitive engineering" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/7607" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "Journal of CyberTherapy and Rehabilitation" volume: "4" number: "1" pages: "83-99" kind: "article" key: "7607" - title: "The theoretical foundation and validity of a component-based usability questionnaire" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Reinder Haakma" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/reinder-haakma" - name: "Don Bouwhuis" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/don-bouwhuis" year: "2009" doi: "http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/01449290701306510" abstract: "Although software engineers extensively use a component-based software engineering (CBSE) approach, existing usability questionnaires only support a holistic evaluation approach, which focuses on the usability of the system as a whole. Therefore, this paper discusses a component-specific questionnaire for measuring the perceived ease-of-use of individual interaction components. A theoretical framework is presented for this compositional evaluation approach, which builds on Taylor's layered protocol theory. The application and validity of the component-specific measure is evaluated by re-examining the results of four experiments. Here, participants were asked to use the questionnaire to evaluate a total of nine interaction components used in a mobile phone, a room thermostat, a web-enabled TV set and a calculator. The applicability of the questionnaire is discussed in the setting of a new usability study of an MP3 player. The use of keyword detection, instead of full speech recognition will make the system more robust. Important therefore is the need to increase the chance that users use specific keywords during their conversation. Research approach -- A two by two experiment, in which participants (n = 20) were asked to answer a number of open questions. Prior to the session participants watched priming videos or unrelated videos. Furthermore, during the session they could see priming pictures or unrelated pictures on a whiteboard behind the person who asked the questions. Findings/Design -- Initial results suggest that participants more often mention specific keywords in their answers when they see priming pictures or videos instead of unrelated pictures or videos. Research limitations/Implications -- If visual priming in the background can increase the chance that people use specific keywords in their discussion with a dialogue partner, it might be possible to create dialogues in a virtual environment which users perceive as natural. This paper argues that this also applies to programmers, especially their debugging. Literature-based framework is presented linking programming with various cognitive activities as well as linking cognitive activities with moods. Further, the effect of mood on debugging was tested in two experiments. In the first experiment, programmers (n = 72) saw short movie clips selected for their ability to provoke specific moods. Afterward, they completed a debugging test. Results showed the video clips had a significant effect on programmers? debugging performance; especially, there was a significant difference after watching low- and high-arousal-evoking video clips. In the second experiment, programmers? mood was manipulated by asking participants (n = 19) to dry run algorithms for at least 16 min. They performed some physical exercises before continuing dry running algorithms again. The results showed a significant increase in arousal and valence that coincided with an improvement in programmers? task performance after the physical exercises. Together, this suggests that programmers? moods influence some programming tasks such as debugging." links: doi: "http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10111-010-0164-1" "url": "http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10111-010-0164-1" tags: - "mood" - "rule-based" - "completeness" - "emotion" - "affective computing" - "testing" - "debugging" - "programming" - "programmer" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/springerlink%3A10.1007-s10111-010-0164-1" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "Cognition, Technology & Work" pages: "1-14" kind: "article" key: "springerlink:10.1007-s10111-010-0164-1" - title: "Towards customized user interface skins: investigating user personality and skin colour" author: - name: "B. These early findings suggest that designers could develop customized skins based on users’ behaviour." links: technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-abcde-34" "url": "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/pub/wpbrinkman/HCI2005Shortpaper.pdf" tags: - "rule-based" - "completeness" - "analysis" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-34" cites: 0 citedby: 0 pages: "89-93" booktitle: "Proceedings of HCI 2005" volume: "2" kind: "inproceedings" key: "abcde-34" - title: "Is usability compositional?" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" year: "2003" month: "januari" tags: - "rule-based" - "component-based software engineering" - "usability" - "composition" - "software component" - "testing" - "software engineering" - "HCI" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-42" cites: 0 citedby: 0 school: "Technische Universiteit Eindhoven" type: "phd" address: "The Netherlands" kind: "phdthesis" key: "abcde-42" - title: "Does cognitive style affect student performance on a web-based course?" author: - name: "Lamis Hammoud" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/lamis-hammoud" - name: "Steve Love" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/steve-love" - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" year: "2009" abstract: "A lot of research has been carried out to assess web-based courses. The results showed that more collaboration channels led to a situation map of better quality, and that including confidence information for objects and events in the map helped the discussion process during the map-making." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/Gunawan2011308" tags: - "completeness" - "meta-model" - "Meta-Environment" - "meta-objects" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-Gunawan2011308" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-Gunawan2011308" - title: "Virtual reality to study responses to social environmental stressors in individuals with and without psychosis" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Veling, Wim" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/veling%2C-wim" - name: "Dorrestijn, Emily" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/dorrestijn%2C-emily" - name: "Sandino, Guntur" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/sandino%2C-guntur" - name: "Vakili, Vanessa" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/vakili%2C-vanessa" - name: "van der Gaag, Mark" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/van-der-gaag%2C-mark" year: "2011" month: "2011" abstract: "A Virtual Reality (VR) environment was created to study psychotic symptoms in patients and non-patients. The workshop will be a platform to discuss new ideas and to share experiences, but also to identify new research challenges and potential solutions." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/BrinkmanPPGU07" tags: - "interaction design" - "design science" - "design research" - "human-computer interaction" - "e-science" - "context-aware" - "design" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-BrinkmanPPGU07" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-BrinkmanPPGU07" - title: "Design considerations for delivering e-learning to surgical trainees" author: - name: "Coughlan, J." link: "https://researchr.org/alias/coughlan%2C-j." - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" year: "2011" abstract: "The challenges in leveraging e-health technologies for continuous medical education/professional development remain. The results of the study show that the method can provide a valid estimation of the physical interaction event effort users made when interacting with a specific part of a device." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/BrinkmanHB07" tags: - "empirical" - "rule-based" - "operating system" - "software components" - "software component" - "testing" - "software engineering" - "context-aware" - "mobile" - "systematic-approach" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-BrinkmanHB07" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-BrinkmanHB07" - title: "An e-learning environment to engage students in ethical thinking" author: - name: "A. In this paper we take the position that a personalised e-learning environment of simulated debating can provide an engaging and inclusive and flexible setting to enhance students{\\^a}{\\texteuro}{\\texttrademark} attainment of critical and independent reasoning skills. The concept is that a student will participate in a simulated debate by answering questions on an ethical case. The answers that they provide will determine the outcome of the debate allowing them to view the impact of their decisions. The package will also allow them to view the actual progression of the case as it played out in real life. The package will be evaluated in a lab and in the field by introducing it as part of the teaching material at three UK universities. The outcome from this research will be a set of design guidelines for developing e-learning environments to teach ethics." links: technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-abcde-24" tags: - "design science" - "design research" - "ethics" - "e-science" - "teaching" - "Meta-Environment" - "e-learning" - "design" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-24" cites: 0 citedby: 0 pages: "7-10" booktitle: "Proceedings of HCI2007 workshop: Design and use and experience of e-learning systems" organization: "Payne" publisher: "Payne" isbn: "978-190-231-6-55-0" kind: "inproceedings" key: "abcde-24" - title: "Personalising emotional skin designs" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "N. These seem all highly personal factors and with a large variation between users. Therefore and the traditional approach of designing for a single average user might be less effective here. Instead and user interfaces should be more fitted to the needs and desires of the individual user. However and most research on customisation focuses on function customisation and and less on form customisation. For example and personalised search engines and customised online purchase offers are both function customisations emphasising the importance of performance and usefulness of a product. When it comes to form customisation and which stresses aesthetic and the emotional need of the user and designers seem mostly guided by what is technically possible or by their intuition and and not always by what is desired by the users. Therefore and a better understanding of form customisation seems welcome." links: technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-abcde-19" "url": "http://www.emotion-in-hci.net/proceedings/emotion_workshop_procs_2005-2007.pdf" tags: - "user interface" - "personalisation" - "design research" - "HCI" - "aesthetic" - "search" - "customisation" - "design" - "systematic-approach" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-19" cites: 0 citedby: 0 pages: "31-33" booktitle: "Emotion in HCI: Joint Proceedings of the 2005 and 2006 and and 2007 International Workshops" organization: "Fraunhofer IRB Verlag Stuttgart." publisher: "Fraunhofer IRB Verlag Stuttgart." isbn: "978-3-8167-7540-9" kind: "inproceedings" key: "abcde-19" - title: "The theoretical foundation and validity of a component-based usability questionnaire" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Reinder Haakma" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/reinder-haakma" - name: "Don Bouwhuis" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/don-bouwhuis" year: "2009" abstract: "Although software engineers extensively use a component-based software engineering (CBSE) approach, existing usability questionnaires only support a holistic evaluation approach, which focuses on the usability of the system as a whole. This effect was significant larger for the two patients than the non-patient group. The gap between such events can be termed as a ‘blind period’, because customer satisfaction is left unobserved and unmanaged. The blind period may sometimes accelerate the growth of customer dissatisfaction. One way to eliminate the impact of the blind period is to reduce the gap between CSM events. The initial assessment indicates that conducting CSM more frequently, may weaken the accuracy of measurement, and increase the cost of the programme. The authors believe that the reason behind these limitations is the use of the external data source, collecting data directly from customer, therefore suggests using the internal data source, as an alternative to measure customer satisfaction. The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual model for the internal data source to measure customer satisfaction. To achieve this objective, a conceptual model need to be developed based on three determined steps: define the formation of customer satisfaction value, identify the CSM factors and dimensions, and mirror the CSM instruments to identify the internal performance values. The paper indicates that internal data source could provide researchers with an alternative data source to measure customer satisfaction with minimum limitations on frequency of implementation, accuracy and cost." links: technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-abcde-31" tags: - "rule-based" - "customer satisfaction" - "meta-model" - "CSM" - "model-driven development" - "data-flow" - "source-to-source" - "Meta-Environment" - "systematic-approach" - "open-source" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-31" cites: 0 citedby: 0 booktitle: "Proceedings of ECIS2006" kind: "inproceedings" key: "abcde-31" - title: "Making mundane pleasures visible: mediating daily likings with lightweight technology" author: - name: "Marije Kanis" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/marije-kanis" - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" year: "2010" doi: "http://springerlink.metapress.com/content/a353qpk2w61270u3/" abstract: "This article discusses the sharing of daily pleasures with lightweight technology. Two mobile applications called PosiPost Me (Mobile internet edition) and PosiPost Be (Bluetooth edition) were developed to understand the potential of remote and proximity-based sharing of positive messages. These implementations are compared through an empirical study of 15 participants in England and The Netherlands who used both applications for a week each. Drawing from interviews and a corpus of 379 shared messages, the study presents an exploration of the types of pleasures people expressed in everyday use. They imply that a tele-delivered multi-patient VRET system might be possible in the future, thereby providing treatment at remote locations and making efficient use of therapist resources." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/PapingBrinkmanvan-der-Mast2010" tags: - "control systems" - "rule-based" - "systematic-approach" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-PapingBrinkmanvan-der-Mast2010" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-PapingBrinkmanvan-der-Mast2010" - title: "towards effective feedback in e-learning packages: The design of a package to support literature searching and referencing and avoiding plagiarism" author: - name: "A. This paper challenges this assumption by presenting findings of a lab experiment. Here users were asked to use two calculators, one with a small display and one with a large display. Results show a significant change in the way users solved equations with the two calculators when faced with high memory demands. To study the effect of these two factors a 2 by 2 experiment was conducted with a group of 24 non-patients, and two patients. For the non-patient group results showed a significant main effect for density on participant{\\textquoteright}s physiological response, their behaviour, reported level of discomfort, and their ability to remember place and location of the numbered avatars. The avatar ethnicity had significant effect on non-patients{\\textquoteright} physiological responses. Comparison between the two patients and non-patient group shows difference in physiological responses, behaviour and reported level of discomfort." links: technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-7623" tags: - "exposure therapy" - "paranoia" - "mental health computing" - "virtual reality" - "psychosis" - "cyberpsychology" - "Meta-Environment" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/7623" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "Journal of CyberTherapy and Rehabilitation" volume: "4" pages: "249-251" kind: "article" key: "7623" - title: "Empirical Usability Testing in a Component-Based Environment: Improving Test Efficiency with Component-Specific Usability Measures" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "R. Subsequently, we conducted a laboratory experiment to systematically investigate the indentified problem of collaborative map construction by individuals who observed an incident from different perspectives. The package will also allow them to view the actual progression of the case as it played out in real life. The paper indicates that internal data source could provide researchers with an alternative data source to measure customer satisfaction with minimum limitations on frequency of implementation, accuracy and cost." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-31" tags: - "rule-based" - "meta-model" - "model-driven development" - "data-flow" - "source-to-source" - "Meta-Environment" - "systematic-approach" - "open-source" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-abcde-31" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-abcde-31" - title: "Personalising emotional skin designs" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "N. The aim of this research was therefore to investigate empirically the influence of service quality and secondary influence on consumers’ behavioural intention to change from their existing internet service provider (ISP) to an alternative service provider. The investigation focuses upon broadband household consumers within the UK. The study was conducted using a postal survey; a self-administered questionnaire was sent to 1600 households and a total of 358 completed replies were obtained. The results suggest that both service quality and secondary influence were significantly correlated to consumers’ behavioural intentions to change ISP. The implications of these findings are presented, followed by a discussion of the limitations of this research and future research directions." links: doi: "http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10796-008-9074-7" dblp: "http://dblp.uni-trier.de/rec/bibtex/journals/isf/DwivediPBL10" tags: - "empirical" - "completeness" - "survey" - "broadband internet" - "adoption" - "service quality" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/DwivediPBL10" cites: 0 citedby: 0 journal: "Information Systems Frontiers" volume: "12" number: "2" pages: "207-217" kind: "article" key: "DwivediPBL10" - title: "Mundane pleasures in everyday life" author: - name: "Marije Kanis" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/marije-kanis" - name: "A. This paper presents a content and user study with two simple mobile phone applications called PosiPost to investigate this question and learn what people express as their pleasures in everyday life. Drawing from a corpus of 379 PosiPost messages that users shared, this paper presents an analysis of users’ pleasurable moments. The results point to the importance of mundaneness of such situations, suggesting that creating sensational “wow” experiences, is not always necessary for giving rise to a person’s positive affect." links: technicalreport: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-abcde-18" tags: - "emotion" - "mundaneness" - "analysis" - "pleasure" - "design" - "mobile" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-18" cites: 0 citedby: 0 pages: "20-21" booktitle: "Proc. Three versions of the e-learning package were developed each of which employed a different style of feedback in response to students{\\^a}{\\texteuro} \\texttrademark answers to formative quizzes. Then experimental testing of the three packages by students who were using the package to support learning in all their modules was undertaken. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected to assess the effectiveness of the package. The results of the pre and post test-test quizzes showed a significant increase of 10\\%. However and this can also be attributed and at least in part and to other teaching activities students were engaged in at that time. The preliminary analysis of the results did not reveal a clear effect for the feedback styles and although the results suggest some variation in students{\\^a}{\\texteuro}{\\texttrademark} preference for feedback styles." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/abcde-25" tags: - "design science" - "testing" - "analysis" - "data-flow" - "C++" - "e-science" - "teaching" - "data-flow analysis" - "design" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-abcde-25" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-abcde-25" - title: "Cognitive engineering of a military multi-modal memory restructuring system" author: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "E. In the case study, the veteran suffering from combat-related PTSD was pleased with the system and felt encouraged talking about his past events." links: published: "https://researchr.org/publication/7607" tags: - "rule-based" - "case study" - "design research" - "domain analysis" - "analysis" - "software engineering" - "reviewing" - "context-aware" - "design" - "systematic-approach" - "systematic review" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/preprint-7607" cites: 0 citedby: 0 type: "Preprint" kind: "techreport" key: "preprint-7607" - title: "Proceedings of the 14th European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics: invent! explore!, ECCE 2007, London, UK, August 28-31, 2007" year: "2007" researchr: "https://researchr.org/publication/ecce%3A2007" cites: 0 citedby: 0 booktitle: "Proceedings of the 14th European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics: invent! explore!, ECCE 2007, London, UK, August 28-31, 2007" conference: "ecce" editor: - name: "Willem-Paul Brinkman" link: "http://mmi.tudelft.nl/willem-paul" - name: "Dong-Han Ham" link: "https://researchr.org/alias/dong-han-ham" - name: "B.
