Nowadays, most semiconductor manufacturers produce internally matched HPA devices to shorten the user's development time. Even though the device used is internally matched, ignorance of the above considerations may lead to device breakdown or oscillation. We present the design of a bias network and a simple microwave coupler with the primary consideration of low insertion loss at 8.3 GHz. Taking account of the practical considerations, we design and evaluate 2 W and 12 W HPA separately prior to integrating them with a coupler. At the receiver side, the UWB signal is received by SkyCross's UWB antenna and subsequently amplified by an ultra wideband low noise amplifier (LNA). However, in a practical design, these parameters are affected by the DC bias network and the grounding of the active device. This article shows how the grounding of the MMIC IC chip, using vias, and the DC bias circuit influence the performance of a practical amplifier. The results of this investigation are used to design single-ended, balanced and two-stage amplifiers, operating at 2.45 GHz. The large-signal characteristics of a power transistor can be accurately extracted from load-pull measurements as described in the literature,1 but the required set up can be expensive and the measurement procedure time consuming. Furthermore, the output load impedance of a power device may not be consistent from chip to chip. Although large-signal S-parameters for a device can be accurately extracted from load-pull measurements, the matching network designed from them will not necessarily match to the desired output load impedance of another device. Further constraints are that the test power of a commercial vector network analyzer (VNA) is normally low (+10 dBm) while the maximum input power to a VNA is limited to 1 W (+30 dBm). Additional equipment is needed in order for the designer to measure the large-signal S-parameters. This article shows an alternate and yet simple approach to the design of high frequency power amplifiers using small-signal S-parameters to first match a commercial power device for gain, followed by a passive load-pull to achieve 3.5 W of output power at 2.212 GHz, with a power-added efficiency (PAE) of approximately 52 percent. Based on the small-signal analysis, it is shown that the output load impedance can be easily located on a Smith chart for tuning. This flexible approach eases the on-board tuning when the PA is cascaded with other microwave circuits.
