Abstract

A classification model of Public Access Terminals (PAT) is proposed, followed by a structured presentation of their User Interface characteristics. Next, the barriers of use along with user requirements of PATs are examined for the groups: elderly, disabled (visually, hearing, intellectually, mobility, dexterity), temporary / occasionally disabled and foreigners. Then, the option for embedded adaptability and adaptivity, as well as external connection options for the user is covered. The available technologies (both software and hardware) to alleviate the barriers is also presented. Based on existing research, a range of accessibility strategies and prototype accessible public terminals is presented. Finally, an overview of the available specific accessibility guidelines and standards is provided.
