This is a report on the methodology and benefits of emulating a complex hardware design before the design goes to the foundry. In this case it was the Sun UltraSparc-I, a giant step forward for Sun engineers, with high associated risks. Emulation not only provided insurance that the design would work at first silicon but found a bug that could have been very serious if not caught early.
